So, I’m blabbering about starting my own blog (again) for a while now…
I had several main or home pages in the last 6+ years.
Couple ones were actually nice, but I always thought about them as a temp solution.
My last attempt was in the end of January 2025, when I created a Hugo page
(still active on my current home page), and posted two whole post (in 3 days)
about some D&D stuff.
Right now, I’m sitting in a chair on the balcony of the beautiful Las Dunas de Santa Catalina Boutique House in Gran Canaria. Yes, I’m on our honeymoon, and yes I could’t keep myself from starting a new blog framework 🤦♂️.
On. Our. Honeymoon…
Well, at least, my beautiful and endlessly understanding (but sometimes most of the time annoyed by me)
wife accepted it. This is how I rest.
I mean, we are resting a lot. We are at a place, where we have a pool, we sleep a lot, drink Sangria, coctails or beer, reading books (I’m so happy that she started reading again) and just having our best life.
I asked her to have this trip as a passive vacation for us. We are nailing it. As much as a couple with ADHD and AuDHD can do.
I’ll post about the trip later, this is a cheap excuse why I had to do this on our honeymoon.
Actually, I wasn’t forced to do it. But I think about myself as a problem solver. I like solving my, my wife’s and everybody’s problems. Even if they don’t want me to do that.
Before going on this trip, I updated all my selfhosted infra, and created a change freeze (one might find this phrasing familiar from big corpo jargon), trying to prevent myself to have a real life issue during the honeymoon, which needs fixing immediately.
Well, of course a Mastodon security fix came up just after the day we got here. But I stayed strong, and ignored it.
At least for a couple of days. After that, I started to create a Woodpecker pipeline, to do the upgrade automatically. I spent hours working on that (yes, my setup is preeetty fucked up), but after 6 failed pipeline (it worked on my machine), I gave it up, and closed the laptop.
And here comes the avalanche what “forced” me to start this blog. We went from passive to active. We visited the Poema del Mar aquarium. I love nature, animals, visiting museums, zoos, botanical gardens. So I took 70+ photos 🙈.
And of course, I wanted to share these photos with my friends (we have an agreement to flood our group chat with photos when one of us travels).
The idea 💡occurred to me, when I drafted the message about our day, with 40+ selected pictures of sea creatures. I NEED A BLOG. I fucking need a blog.
So that night I started researching, and realized, that I want the following:
- S3 like media storage for the blog (https://media.blint.me)
- SSG (static site generator)
- would be nice if I can do it without JS, or as little as I can
And my plan started to take a form. I spent one of my morning on setting up a new NixOS vm on my Proxmox with Garage as my S3 alternative, and Caddy for TLS and reverse proxying.
Once I had S3, I drafted a SvelteKit project (repo?) with mdsvex and @sveltejs/adapter-static.
I heard a lot about SvelteKit and I want to learn it.
Finally created a Woodpecker pipeline (for my already existing CI) so deploying the site is just a git push.
Processing and uploading the media to Garage is a local thing for me right now, but I’ll tinker with it later.
That’s it. This is the story, how and why I created a new site for my blog, how much I overthought the process.
And how grateful am I, that my wife did not kicked me out (yet).
Dear Reader, I tip my non-existent hat in front of you, if you managed to read it to this point. I can promise you my sincere thoughts, but without the proper writing skill (I’ll try my best). In the future I’ll probably be consistently chaotic, but enthusiastic!
